Automated Fault Injection function, Test scripts and a new CTE for TESSY 4.1 from Razorcat

Tamworth/UK & Berlin/Germany, September 2018

Razorcat introduces the latest release of its unit and integration test tool for embedded software: TESSY 4.1 offers new powerful features such as the fault injection and test script perspective as well as a completely newly implemented classification tree editor (CTE).

With automated fault injection, developers of hardware and software for embedded systems and components can conveniently generate and manage test cases to be implemented in unit tests, integration tests and component tests automatically without changing the source code – saving time and money

Fault injection
Fault injection is a proven method for subjecting the software especially of safety-critical applications to documented tests. For a proven 100% statement coverage, error situations can now be tested completely automatically in TESSY 4.1 with the help of the "Fault Injection" function without changing the source code.

Fault injections are created based on unreached branches of the function flow graph. In regression testing, fault injections are automatically placed in the correct location in the source code even after code changes......... CONTINUES

Automated Fault Injection function for TESSY 4.1 from Razorcat

Berlin, Germany and Tamworth, England,  9th January 2018

Razorcat, manufacturer of test tools for the development of embedded software, has announced that the forthcoming release (4.1) of the TESSY unit and integration test tool will support automated fault injection.

With automated fault injection, developers of hardware and software for embedded systems and components can conveniently generate and manage test cases to be implemented in unit tests, integration tests and component tests automatically without changing the source code – saving time and money

Classically, whenever 100% code coverage cannot be achieved with normal test cases, fault injections are applied manually. This can be by adding testing code, by code replacements using compiler macros, by replacing functions (stubbing) or by changing variable values using debug tools. These methods have the disadvantage that either they need to be added and removed manually or the instrumentation of the source code remains in place within production code. Given that it is most probably the test engineer who first identify the need for a fault injection, if the code needs to be changed, the subsequent corrections to the code will ned to be subject to the software development approvals process required by the safety standards. Such an iteration highly increases development time and cost. ”........ CONTINUES

Efficiently store gigabytes of data on microcontroller NAND flash

Tamworth, Staffs and Hilden, Germany 31st July 2015

Segger has upgraded the emFile file management system for embedded applications by adding a block grouping feature to reduce the amount of RAM needed for block management of NAND flash memory. NAND can now be used for gigabytes of data with even with smaller microcontrollers.

NAND flash is the fastest and most cost-efficient way to store large amounts of data, but when using external NAND memory with microcontrollers, RAM limitation is usually the bottleneck: for example, an 8 GB NAND flash, divided into 4096 blocks, would normally require 8 Kbyte RAM.

Using block grouping, where the driver treats multiple blocks as a single block, considerably reduces the RAM used for administrating the NAND flash memory. Users can scale the size of a block group according to their requirements. With block grouping, the RAM for an 8 GB NAND flash can be less than 1 Kbyte. Critically, block grouping does not affect processing speed.

This new feature further improves the efficiency of emFile’s NAND driver. It has outstanding read and write performance: almost 6 Mbytes/s for reading and 3.8 Mbytes/s for writing. Furthermore, it is fail-safe, which means the file system remains intact even in cases of unexpected resets. By adding the optional journaling feature, this safety can be extended to the data residing in the file system.

Block grouping is integrated in the latest release of emFile. . ........ CONTINUES

Phaedrus Systems Donates ICE to Loughborough University

Tamworth, 31 August 2011.  Phaedrus Systems has presented several industrial grade In-Circuit Emulators (ICE) to the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering at Loughborough University.

The ICEs, donated by Phaedrus Systems’ customers, were accepted from Chris Hills, Phaedrus’ CTO by Bill Gabb, the Industrial Liaison Tutor in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, Loughborough University.

The School’s undergraduate programme is strongly based in the real world, and uses, as far as possible, industrial tools. The ICEs join an Atmel 8051 lab, that Chris Hills was instrumental in donating. The lab is in regular use, introducing all computing students to assembler on 8-bit MCUs, important both for employable skills and for providing a first-hand understanding of computer hardware

Loughborough’s approach is reflected in the 96% employment rate for the embedded computing graduates, and the high take up of the optional work placement year.

Fast route to user interfaces

Tamworth, 11th August 2011: Phaedrus Systems is launching a new drag and drop tool for quickly and easily creating user interfaces. SEGGER’s emWin GUIBuilder replaces handwritten code with drag and drop supported by keyboard operations for quick placement of widgets.

“User interfaces are a vital part of any embedded design, yet can be difficult and time-consuming to create,” said Chris Hills, CTO of Phaedrus Systems. “The emWin GUIBuilder requires no knowledge of C yet can produce GUIs that work well and are ergonomically sound.”

emWin GUIBuilder runs on a PC to produce a GUI that can be adapted to any size of physical or virtual display with any LCD controller and CPU. It is compatible with single task and multi-task environments, and runs with any commercial RTOS and with SEGGER’s emBOS.

The completed design is saved as compact C source code, which will run even in memory constrained systems. The code can be re-loaded into the editor to allow for changes to the GUI layout, even after adding code to further customize the interface.

The GUIBuilder is free for existing users of emWin. emWin is available as full source code and comes with a simple licensing model without royalties.
